  2. Installation Notes

  4. These zip files contain the sample applications from Jeffrey M. Richter's
  5. book, "Windows 3.0: A Developer's Guide", published by M & T Books, 501
  6. Galveston Drive, Redwood City, CA 94063-4728. Call (800) 356-2002 for
  7. information (if in California, call (800) 533-4372). You must have Phil
  8. Katz's PKUNZIP.EXE program to recreate the installation disks. If you don't
  9. have it, get it from any good BBS (I won't do it an injustice by including
  10. only a portion of it with these files...you really should have the entire
  11. PKZIP system).

  13. 1. Each zip file (ADG_1-3.ZIP, ADG_4-6.ZIP, and ADG_7-8.ZIP) must be unzipped
  14.    onto an individual floppy disk. You may use any disk format, but they
  15.    were originally on 5¼-inch 360K DS/DD floppies. The unzip command is:

  17.                PKUNZIP ADG_1-3 a: -d -o
  18.  
  19.    The 'a:' represents the drive letter of your floppy drive. If you make that
  20.    drive the current DOS drive, you can eliminate the drive parameter from the
  21.    command line. The '-d' switch instructs PKUNZIP to create the subdirectories
  22.    as it unzips the files. The '-o' causes any like-named files to be replaced.

  24. 2. Label each floppy with the filename of its corresponding zip file. For
  25.    example, the 1st floppy disk should be labeled ADG_1-3 with this command:

  27.                LABEL a:
  28.  
  29.    DOS will respond with the current label (if any) for the floppy disk, and
  30.    prompt you to enter a new string. Enter the string in all uppercase, exactly
  31.    as it appears in the filename of the zip file (in this example, ADG_1-3) and
  32.    press Enter. You should end up with a total of 3 floppy disks.

  34. 3. You should already have Windows 3.0 installed on your hard disk, and your
  35.    DOS PATH should include the \WINDOWS subdirectory (or its equivalent). The
  36.    SETUP.EXE on the Install disk (labeled ADG_1-3) is a Windows program, so
  37.    insert that disk into your floppy drive. Start the installation by entering
  38.    the following command at the DOS prompt:

  40.                WIN a:SETUP.EXE

  42.    You can also run the setup from within Windows Program Manager:
  43.  
  44.    - Start Windows by typing WIN at the DOS prompt
  45.    - Click File on the Program Manager menu
  46.    - Click Run... from the File submenu
  47.    - Enter the following in the Command Line textbox:  a:setup.exe
  48.    - Click the OK button or press Enter

  50.    You can also run the setup from the Windows File Manager:

  52.    - Start Windows by typing WIN at the DOS prompt
  53.    - If not already displayed, double-click on the Main group icon to open
  54.      the Main group window.
  55.    - Double-click on the File Manager icon to start the File Manager
  56.    - Click on the a: Drive icon
  57.    - Double-click on the a:\ root directory in the directory tree window
  58.    - Double-click on the SETUP.EXE file icon in the file list window

  60. 4. Follow the screen prompts; the setup is very thorough and easy to follow.
  61.    The setup program will create the directories, copy all the files, create
  62.    the Windows group under the Program manager, and install the program icons
  63.    in the new group. Each sample application from the book is stored in its
  64.    own subdirectory (named to indicate the application and the corresponding
  65.    chapter in the Richter book), complete with resources and source code.

  67. 5. If you run the PM Restore program, it will not show up in the Windows Task
  68.    Manager, but it is actually running... try to run it again, and Windows
  69.    will tell you so! Be sure to select Minimize On Use from the Options menu of
  70.    the Program Manager, to get the full benefit of the PM Restore utility.
